Herbie
Goes Bananas #16

Tory Alonzo, this car was designed by Disney to float in water. It
was used in the scene in Bananas where Paco is reunited with
Herbie upon seeing him struggling for life in the water just off shore. Scuba
divers, using a system of weights, pulled the car down below the surface
of the water and raised it up again to simulate the vehicle gasping for
air. Remote operated, hydraulically powered hood also added to this
effect. Filled with foam to make it buoyant, it also had fiberglass
wheels, tires, and running boards. Neglected for many years as one
of the "fab four junkyard Herbies", the car was finally rescued
and restored to its current condition.
